Terrey Hills Road Changes Draw Concern As Mona Vale Feedback Stays Open

Revised plans for Mona Vale Road West would change traffic movements, local road access, bus stops and walking links between Terrey Hills and Ingleside, as concerns remain over possible westbound delays near McCarrs Creek Road.

People using the corridor have until Tuesday, 15 September 2026, to comment on the updated design.



Mona Vale Road West Changes Affect Local Journeys

The upgrade covers Mona Vale Road between McCarrs Creek Road in Terrey Hills and Powderworks Road in Ingleside, where Transport for NSW says peak-period congestion already affects the corridor.

Plans would widen the road from two lanes to four with a central concrete safety barrier, while changes at several intersections would alter how local traffic enters, leaves and moves along the route.

At McCarrs Creek Road, the revised design includes new traffic signals and a roundabout. Transport for NSW says the changes are intended to improve safety, increase capacity and reduce delays.

The current westbound arrangement allows through traffic to continue past the intersection, with vehicles entering from McCarrs Creek Road using a slip lane to merge. Under the revised plans, westbound traffic would instead encounter signals.

That change has prompted concern about how traffic may move through the area when slow-moving heavy vehicles are also travelling uphill from Kimbriki Road.

Heavy Vehicles Part Of Terrey Hills Concern

Transport for NSW continues to list a truck climbing lane, dedicated turning lanes and traffic signals among the proposed works at Kimbriki Road.

However, the design released in August has drawn concern over the westbound entry used by trucks leaving the Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre. A September review of the plans described the shown slip lane as appearing to extend for about 50 metres despite earlier references to a truck climbing lane.

The concern is that heavy vehicles could occupy the left lane while climbing towards McCarrs Creek Road, with lighter vehicles using the right lane before reaching the proposed signals.

Transport for NSW maintains that the McCarrs Creek Road changes are intended to increase intersection capacity and reduce delays. Traffic impacts will also be considered through the Review of Environmental Factors.

Local Road Access Would Also Change

Residents and road users around Tumburra Street, Wirreanda Road and Addison Road would also see changes to local connections.

The Tumburra Street intersection would move about 40 metres west and become left-in and left-out only. A proposed underpass at Wirreanda Road would provide another connection with Mona Vale Road, while a new local road would link Addison Road and Tumburra Street.

At Powderworks Road, new signals and increased intersection capacity are proposed, along with about 80 metres of minor widening east of Mona Vale Road.

The project would also relocate bus stops at the Kimbriki and Powderworks intersections.

For people walking or cycling, a shared-use path is proposed along the northern side of Mona Vale Road between Kanangra Avenue and Bahai Temple Way.

Wildlife measures include a fauna overpass east of Kimbriki Road and an underpass intended to improve connections between surrounding habitat areas.

Community Feedback Open Until 15 September

The current consultation gives road users and the wider community an opportunity to comment on the updated design and identify concerns to be considered through the environmental review.

The Review of Environmental Factors is expected to examine traffic, noise, biodiversity and heritage impacts and is due to go on public display in late 2026, when another opportunity for submissions is expected.



Procurement is already underway. Subject to planning approvals, construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.

Feedback on the revised Mona Vale Road West design remains open until Tuesday, 15 September 2026.
