Did you know that Mona Vale Road will soon have significant updates for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and even the local fauna?
Background and Context
Mona Vale Road has long been identified as a critical arterial route linking the Northern Beaches to Sydney’s northern suburbs. The road, particularly its western section, has been a known source of congestion and safety concerns over many years.
The planned works will upgrade 3.4 kilometres of Mona Vale Road between McCarrs Creek Road in Terrey Hills and Powderworks Road in Ingleside, expanding the road from two to four lanes. Key elements include a new signalised intersection at Kimbriki Road with turning lanes and a truck climbing lane. The Tumburra Street intersection will shift about 40 metres west with left-in, left-out access, while the Addison Road intersection will be restricted to emergency vehicles.

A local road connection will be constructed between Bungendore Street and Powderworks Road using the existing Harvey Road corridor. Bus stops near Tumburra Street will be removed, with services redirected along the new connection. Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from a shared path on the northern side of the road, along with upgraded lighting and landscaping. Wildlife crossings include a 40-metre fauna bridge and two underpasses.

Community Sentiment
Local representatives have highlighted the project as a priority for the area. The community has also consistently raised concerns over safety risks and congestion along the corridor.
Advocacy from the local community and renewed funding commitments have now secured adequate funds for the project, supported by state contributions.

Next Steps
Planning, design, and environmental assessments are expected to take about two and a half years, enabling construction to start in 2028. Construction is anticipated to run for at least two years. A property acquisition program is due to commence early next year, with details yet to be released.
